Chapter 13.
When Ettie and Elsa-May got home, they both fell exhausted onto Ettieâs small couch while Snowy tried his best to jump up with them.
âIf I wasnât tired before I am now. Did you have to offer to cook for Arthur and Josh?â Ettie asked.
âI did. And we've had our dinner, too, so no more cooking tonight I just felt sorry for them.â
âMe too. I must say I thought what you said to Josh was very good, Elsa-May.â
âDenke.â Elsa-May chuckled.
âI could tell it comforted him greatly, especially when you helped him see that Margaret didn't love him enough to be happy with his commitment to life in the Amish community. It must be hard when people donât have anyone really close to talk with. Weâve got each other we can confide in.â
âEveryone needs someone. Thatâs how Gott made us. Every man needs a helpmeet.â
âI suppose thatâs true. I do hope Josh finds himself a nice girl. Itâll make him feel so much better. I find it hard to believe he waited so long for Margaret to come back."
âCanât have helped that she kept talking to him and calling him,â Elsa-May said.
âJah,â Ettie agreed. âA clean break wouldâve been better for him. What do you think she was talking to him about? We never really found that out.â Ettie pulled a face. âWe canât talk with him again.â
âNee, we canât. We canât bring up Margaretâs name again.â
âYou rest on the couch, Elsa-May. Iâll bring you a cup of hot tea.â
âDenke, Ettie.â
When Ettie came back with the tea, Elsa-May said, âI never realized how comfortable this couch is.â
âItâs mine. Donât get too comfortable.â Ettie laughed. âNo one likes coming here to sit in those dreadful chairs.â She pointed to the old chairs opposite the couch. âWhy donât we buy new ones? Iâve got that money Agatha left me. We can buy a couch the same size as this one so it matches, and a couple of armchairs.â
Elsa-May dropped her head and frowned. âThose chairs are good. Thereâs nothing wrong with them, Ettie. I donât know what youâre talking about. That would be wasteful. Weâll just get Jeremiah to fix them up and strengthen them a little, so they donât creak.â
Ettie laughed. âWouldnât you like a couch to sit on like this one?â
âNee. Itâs all right I suppose, but Iâd fall asleep on it, and Iâd never get any knitting done.â Right then, Snowy came bounding back inside through the dog door. âSnowy, sit on your bed!â
Snowy stared into her face.
âGo to your bed!â Elsa-May said a little more firmly.
He walked over and lay down on the dog bed in the corner. Ettie watched on in amazement.
